How To Use Malas

Using a Mala Necklace

1. Hold the Mala: Start by holding your mala in one hand, usually the dominant hand, with the beads resting between your fingers.

2. Find the Guru Bead: The guru bead is the larger bead at the end of the mala. It serves as a starting and ending point for your meditation.

3. Set Your Intention: Before you begin, take a moment to set your intention or choose a mantra that resonates with you. This could be a word, phrase, or affirmation.

4. Start Counting: Begin at the guru bead and use your thumb to move to the first bead. As you reach each bead, recite your chosen mantra or intention.

5. Continue Around the Mala: Repeat this process, moving from bead to bead. Each full rotation around the mala will typically consist of 108 beads, allowing for deep, focused repetition of your mantra.

6. Do Not Cross the Guru Bead: When you reach the guru bead again, do not cross it. Instead, pause and reflect on your practice, or if you wish to continue, simply turn the mala around and start counting in the opposite direction.

7. Conclude Your Practice: Once you have completed your rounds, take a moment to sit in silence, reflecting on your intention or the feelings you experienced during your practice.

Using a Mala Bracelet

While mala bracelets are not typically used for meditation, they can still serve as a reminder of your intentions and promote mindfulness throughout the day. You can wear your bracelet and take a moment to focus on your breath or your intentions whenever you notice it.

Care Tips

  • Treat your mala with respect and care, as it can hold personal significance.
  • Store it in a safe, clean place when not in use.

Using a mala can enhance your mindfulness and meditation practices, allowing you to cultivate a deeper connection to your intentions.
